1947: Perhaps one of the most violent tornadoes ever to strike the Texas Panhandle occurred this afternoon in Carson,
Hemphill and Lipscomb Counties before continuing its 221 mile total track into Woodward, OK. This massive tornado completely destroyed the town of Glazier and grew to one mile in width when it struck Higgins. In Texas alone, 68 people died, another 201 were injured and around $1.5M in damage was sustained. |
